Catherine Opie, born in 1961 in Sandusky, USA, now lives and works in Los Angeles. Opie studies the connections between mainstream and non-mainstream societies. By specializing in portraiture, studio and landscape photography, she documents the relationship between the individual and the space he or she inhabits.
Opie has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1997), St. Louis Art Museum (2000), Photographers’ Gallery, London (2000), Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2002), Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut (2006), Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2006), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008), and the Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008). Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2010 and 2016); and Portland Art Museum (2010-11), among other venues.
