BUILDING AND HISTORY

Architecture

As one of the closest buildings along the Huangpu River, Star Art Museum has a 120-meter viewing platform along the river and a super-large roof river view platform. Adjacent to the core CBD area of Xuhui, it is the shining place of Xuhui Riverside business Circle and noble living community along the river, and the Pudong World Expo Complex across the river.

A long, sloping-roofed building stands on the banks of the Huangpu River, its solid, flowing structure revealing a silvery-grey hue, almost connected to the water and the sky by the morning light. This is the Start Museum, back in 2014, Mr. He was invited by the government to build an art museum on the west bank of Xuhui that represents pioneering thinking in international contemporary art. In the same year, the Start Museum preparatory team was established and a call for proposals was launched for 12 top architect firms from around the world. The project was awarded to Mr. Jean Nouvel after a vote by 109 key social, cultural and intellectual figures and artists. As soon as he was invited, Mr. Jean Nouvel invited Mr. He to France for a site visit. The two talked about their imaginations and aspirations for art, in Nice. They discussed the  preliminary concept of the Start Museum building — a romantic art story that they will write together by the Huangpu River. With his personal funding, Mr. He invited the world's leading architects to create an international standard art museum for the city of Shanghai. Over the next eight years, Mr. Nouvel and his team have spent unimaginable energy and creativity in the project. Finally, the joint efforts of AJN, the Start Museum team and all the construction units have created this wonderful piece of architecture today.

Jean Nouvel has chosen to continue telling the story of building without destroying its connection to the past, so that the Start Museum is not only a new building based on the Rihui Port Warehouse, but also a continuation of the past. He has chosen inherit the industrial style in the building's structure and to make a contemporary presentation. Jean Nouvel has also made a lot of ingenuity in the structure of the building's beams and columns, such as the small steel beams above and below the main beams, a design that pays tribute to the heritage of traditional Chinese mortise-tenon and bucket arch. The entire high ceiling space is free from a single beam, maximising the size of the interior. The carefully designed mezzanine carries and counteracts the horizontal forces, making the whole space solid and simple, and perfectly able to withstand gravity. And Jean Nouvel emphasises not only once the primacy of light based architecture. He considered light to be the entity, a basic material that could be applied, and this theory is evident in the design of the Start Museum. Every afternoon the daylight shines into the interior of the venue, warm and dazzling, as if the light has become the shadow of the Start Museum, stretched out by the building. This sensible use of the possibilities and diversity of light adds to the richness of the architectural vocabulary and adds a touch of poetry to the Start Museum. And seen from a distance, the Start Museum, with gently scattering of huge ships and green industrial crane towers, allows the wind and light to flow through its long, airy body, as if silently responding to the history of the area and people's group memories, and — ready for new stories.

History of Architecture

, the original site of the Start Museum was the first sea-to-land transport platform in modern Chinese history, the Rihui Port Warehouse, which was built in 1907. The Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1894 and the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed. Since then, voices of change and reform were heard all over the country, and the building of railways was one of the key. It is the only station in Shanghai that can be used for both water transport and land, as it is located near the Rihui Port, a tributary of the Huangpu River. After the August 13 Incident in 1937, Shanghai South Railway Station was destroyed by bombs dropped by Japanese planes, and the Rihui Port took over the freight traffic of the two stations and a small part of the passenger traffic, and was renamed as Rihui Port Railway Station. In 1958, the Rihui Port Railway Station was renamed as Shanghai South Railway Station. Turn to 2006, the new Shanghai South Railway Station was opened and the former Shanghai South Railway Station changed its name to Nanpu Railway Station. And with the arrival of the World Expo, this old railway station closed on June 28th 2009.
