Anselm Kiefer was born in 1945 in Donaueschingen, Germany. His work includes paintings, vitrines, installations, artist books and a range of works on paper such as drawings, watercolors, collages and altered photographs. The physical elements of his practice-from lead, concrete and glass to textiles, roots and burned books-have both symbolic resonance and broad scope. By integrating, extending and regenerating images and techniques, the importance of the sacred and the spiritual, myth and memory is brought to light.
Kiefer’s work has been exhibited and collected by major museums around the world, including the Bern Art Museum, Switzerland; West Germany Pavilion, 39th Venice Biennale, Italy; Dusseldorf Art Museum, Germany; Museum of Contemporary Art, Bordeaux; And the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. Solo exhibitions include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain; National Library of France, Paris; Georges Pompidou Center, Paris, etc.
